Piracy

I think it is time to do away with the Somali pirates. They are holding hostages from other nations as well. Now is the chance to end it all. We should send our special ops in to take the pirates out and anyone else in our way. Then we should get the Captain back and free all the other prisoners. We could bring the ships in to take everyone home. Seems to me that there is no difference between terrorism and piracy. The world would surly appreciate being rid of an international nuisance and they get their people back without having to do a thing. Then we can train new navy recruits taking out pirates along the coast till something is done with Somalia. This should be a way to make the international community happy with us, and our use of military force. We took the Barbary Pirates out we can do it again. There really isn’t much difference here the world put up with those pirates till we took them out. I am so tired of people saying that ‘military force should be our last option.’ Why?

Did Obama study for his test?

Our new Vice President told us the President would have a test within 6 months. That is not that unusual, just unusual to tell that to the world. Joe should have helped him study for it though. Perhaps he thought he would have more time. Three months into this administration and every major power in the world has checked him. Iran couldnt wait to launch a satellite as soon as Bush left office. Russia has rebuffed the offer from Washington to help with Iran in exchange for leaving Poland and the Czech Republic out of the missle defense shield. Pakistan has given the Taliban the Swat valley to run. North Korea is poised to launch a satellite and dare us to do anything about it. Finally the Chinease are buzzing our ships in the South China Sea. The world wants to see where they stand with the new President. Things may be more serious now and therefore the tests come faster. What has the responose been so far? Well the Iranian satellite didn't get alot of attention from the administration. The response really seems to be the plea to the Russians for help, citing Iran as the missle threat to Europe. Obama recently expressed a willingness to negotiate with the Taliban in Afghanistan, following the Pakistani lead. North Korea is a serious threat but Kim Jong Ill, like all dictators, acts like a bully. The response to this one is, we can shoot it down if we wanted too, like kids on a playground. Certinly do not expect too much rebuke of the Chinease. Clinton just left China and avoided the human rights issue besides we need them to buy our bonds. This policy is definatly change of direction...just seems to be a wrong turn.

The Russians are coming!!!

A new foreign policy mistake for the new administration? I think so. Obama recently sent a letter to the Russian President offering the possibility of dropping the missile shield over Poland for help with Iran nukes. This is an extremely naive move. I thought Hillary had the State department under control. One of the jobs of his foreign policy is to protect him from embarrassing himself publicly. The Russians took the letter as a sign of weakness and rebuffed it in public. The proper way is to feel out the Russians and have secret low-level meetings to feel out the other side before you offer a "tit for tat" proposal. This simply puts all the power in Russian hands. First off they have no incentive to help in Iran and the US simply has nothing to offer. Nothing except less security for our friends. The missile shield over Eastern Europe should be non negotiable, these people are our allies. Pulling the shield down from that section would just acknowledge thier sphere of influence. This relegates Eastern Europe back to a battleground between East and West. These nations have been sold down the river throughout the history of western civilization. Frankly they have been more loyal to the US war on terror, Poland in particular, than most of our Western European allies. The Russians will do anything to embarrass the US right now they have us on the ropes with a naive foreign policy ideology. One that suggests if you just were nice to your enemies they will be nice to you. I hope Obama has learned from this misstep and even if he does gut our defenses and backs down all over the world he at least makes it look like he is negotiating from a position of strength.

Are we safer because of Iraq?

My hometown paper The Indianapolis Star ran an editorial from Lee Hamilton on February 23, 2009. He commented on the war on terror in this way:
"We know that al-Qaida still seeks to harm the United States. The statements of Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri make this clear. And foreign-policy missteps, especially in Iraq, have amplified the threat. It is possible that al-Qaida believes that attacks on U.S. interests in Afghanistan and Iraq are more effective, less expensive and less risky."
Now I respect other people's opinions but I have a problem when they refuse to connect the dots in the most obvious ways. This statement conveys the frustration the liberals have with the war in Iraq, pointing out that they think we are less safe because we invaded.  However in the next sentence he admits that "it is possible" al-Qaida finds it preferable to attack in Iraq and Afghanistan instead of on our homeland. The political translation is that we are safer at home because we invaded Iraq. Anyone that believes al-Qadia was going to hang around and fight us in Afghanistan is simply seeing the situation through rose colored glasses. Terrorists do not hold territory they simply murder people for the shock value of it. When we invaded Afghanistan al-Qaida left a few lackies behind to hold us off while the leadership made its escape. Invading Iraq was a thumb in thier eye. They stated that we were to leave the Mid East or suffer more terrorist attacks at home. When Bush invaded Iraq he messed up their game plan. We did not start this war on terror we were forced into it so we had no control. But we had a moment where the ball was in our court to respond and Bush took that opportunity to focus al-Qaida's attacks in the Mid East away from our soil. Al-Qaida had to respond to 140,000 troops on Iraqi land or lose face with their supporters. Guess what...it worked. Attacks have been concentrated in Iraq by al-Qaida. The Taliban has focused on attacks in Afghanistan, which they were always going to do. The only saving grace is that we have managed to keep them from attacking the U.S. again by focusing attention in Iraq. So the question: Is Mr. Hamilton being intellectually dishonest, or does he simply not understand the war we are fighting?
